• A template is used to align longitudinal bars in the footing and column.
• Transition bars measuring approximately 12 bar diameters are manufactured to connection bars in the footing and column by upset headed couplers, which are torqued as specified by the manufacturer.
• Before the erection of precast column, a spiral is placed around the bars protruding from the footing, and raised and tied around the longitudinal bars after installation of transition bars.
• The connection region is eventually formed and filled by pumping a cementitious grout.

• Testing observation showed that slipping would occur within upset headed couplers under large lateral loads.
